Jane Goodall On Leadership, Vision, Responsibility and Staying Motivated Through Adversity

Renowned primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall recently joined a thought-provoking conversation with CRL's President, Bawa Jain, and Bart Myers. The discussion delved into her remarkable journey, the challenges facing humanity today, and how she has continuously inspired hope and action in the face of adversity.

The Biggest Challenge: A Loss of Hope

When asked about the most pressing challenge confronting us, Jane Goodall emphasized that it is difficult to pinpoint a single issue, as so many are interconnected. However, she highlighted a profound problem: the widespread loss of hope. According to Goodall, the feeling of despair and helplessness is pervasive, and it is easy to be overwhelmed by the state of the world.

She shared that when people tell her they feel powerless, she advises them to focus on something local that they care about—whether it's homelessness, environmental cleanup, or aiding refugees. By taking action, no matter how small, people can see the difference they are making. This feeling of accomplishment can reignite hope and motivate further efforts, creating a ripple effect of positive change. Goodall’s message is clear: change begins with small, local actions that inspire others and, collectively, these efforts can create global impact.

Roots & Shoots: Empowering the Next Generation

Goodall discussed her groundbreaking youth program, Roots & Shoots, which she founded in the early 1990s. The initiative began with 12 high school students in Tanzania and has since grown to include participants in over 85 countries. The program encourages young people to choose and lead projects in three areas: helping people, animals, and the environment. This approach empowers them to take meaningful action in their communities while understanding the interconnectedness of these issues.

Roots & Shoots has proven to be a powerful force for change, with participants from kindergarten through university levels, and even adults, joining the movement. Goodall believes that the program’s success lies in its bottom-up approach, allowing young people to select projects that resonate with them, rather than imposing ideas from above. This freedom fosters passion and commitment, which are essential for sustained action.

Inspiring Change in Corporations

Goodall also shared her experiences working with corporations to promote ethical practices. She reflected on her collaboration with Conoco, before it became ConocoPhillips, as one of the most ethical partnerships she encountered in the oil industry. However, she acknowledged the ethical tightrope she walks in engaging with corporations, especially those with questionable practices.

Goodall recounted a conversation with the CEO of a major corporation who had been working for years to make his company more ethical. He cited three motivations: recognizing the finite nature of natural resources, responding to consumer pressure for ethically made products, and the influence of his 10-year-old daughter, who confronted him about the environmental impact of his business. This story underscores the importance of reaching decision-makers on a personal level, especially through their families, to inspire change.

Combatting Hatred and Division

The conversation also touched on the rise of hatred and division in society. Goodall emphasized the importance of education and bringing people together from diverse backgrounds to foster understanding and empathy. She recounted the success of Roots & Shoots gatherings that brought together young people from different cultures and ethnicities, helping them to see beyond their differences and recognize their shared humanity.

Goodall expressed concern about the influence of powerful figures and organizations that propagate hatred and misinformation. She acknowledged the difficulty in reaching those who are deeply entrenched in such ideologies but remained committed to finding ways to promote unity and compassion.

A Message of Hope and Responsibility

As the discussion drew to a close, Goodall shared a simple yet profound message: every individual makes an impact on the planet every day, and it is up to each of us to choose how we live. She urged people to consider the ethical implications of their choices—whether in what they buy, how products are made, or the treatment of workers and animals.

Goodall’s enduring optimism and dedication to making a positive difference serve as an inspiration to all. Her work through Roots & Shoots and her advocacy for ethical practices remind us that even in the face of adversity, we have the power to effect change and build a better world for future generations.
